WATCH: Ridiculously brilliant ‘Funny Money’ an outstanding success for Clonmel Theatre Guild

Hard working Clonmel Theatre Guild produce mind-blowing production of Ray Cooney’s ‘Funny Money’.

Clonmel Theatre Guild’s ridiculously brilliant dinner theatre production ‘Funny Money’ blew audiences minds at Raheen House Hotel this week.

Guild founder Jim Malone excelled as buoyant Londoner Henry Perkins who lands a ‘bloody fortune’ on his way home from work. Malone’s playful demeanour as he describes sitting on a toilet in the Prince of Wales pub counting a suitcase full of cash is priceless, driving his wife Jean, played by an erratically excellent Bernadette Culhane, to drink.

The plot thickens, confusion unravels and bent copper Davenport, played by a corruptly confident Tom Callery, throws a spanner in the works. The chemistry on stage between Malone and Callery seduced sold-out Raheen audiences to tears of hysteria, with the addition of Vic Johnson, performed by Hugh Hennessy, a sight to behold. Hennessy’s persona plunged us into real London as the farcical tale grows tangents, and the trio created theatrical moments of madness that are sure to go down in Guild folklore.

Witty Margaret Morrissey’s role as Sergeant Slater, an endearing Fidelma Collins as Betty Johnson, a playful Dan Kennedy as London taxi man Bill, and a comical Adrienne Small as a passer-by drove home a ludicrous two and a half hours of local comedy bliss.

Guild chairperson and director Carol Acheson was thrilled with how hard everyone worked to make Funny Money a fantastic production. She added: “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed working with the cast and backstage crew. As director, I am extremely grateful because as always, the cast and backstage crew have been working flat out to squeeze every last drop of humour out of this show”.
